Dr Mélissa Mialon is a food engineer with a PhD in nutrition.

Dr Mialon is a Research Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. Her research is funded by an « Applying Research into Policy and Practice Fellowship » from the Irish Health Research Board. She is also an honorary Research Fellow at the University of São Paulo in Brazil.

Dr Mialon serves as an expert for various health and consumers organisations.

Dr Mialon co-coordinates the « Governance, Ethics and Conflicts of Interest in Public Health » (GECI-PH) network.

Dr Mialon has published peer-reviewed articles in the Lancet, the Lancet Planetary Health, Social Science and Medicine, Obesity Reviews, Globalization and Health, Addiction, and the International Breastfeeding Journal. She also published book chapters and participated in the writing of commissioned reports. She published a book o commercial determinants of health, entitled « Big Food & Cie » in French.

Her research focuses on commercial determinants of health, particularly the practices of corporations that influence public health policy, research and practice. Dr Mialon developed a novel approach to identify and monitor the political practices of the food industry at the national level. Her research protocol was developed for INFORMAS – a global network for monitoring food environments.

She also conducts research on solutions to address the commercial determinants of health.

Dr Mialon is French and Mauritian, with an Indian, African and European background.

In 2018-20, Dr Mialon was a FAPESP Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. As part of this project, she was a visiting fellow at the University of Antioquia (Colombia) and the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA), University of Chile, in 2019.

In 2016-17, Dr Mialon was part of the Mental Health and Addiction Research Group (MHARG), University of York, in the UK, where she worked on a project funded by Wellcome and entitled: ‘The Alcohol Industry and Public Interest Science’.

Between 2013 and 2016, Dr Mialon undertook a PhD with the WHO Collaborating Centre for obesity prevention at Deakin University, in Australia. In 2015, she was a visiting research fellow at the Pacific Center for the Prevention of Obesity and Non-communicable Disease (C-POND) in Fiji.

Before joining Deakin University, Dr Mialon obtained a BSc in physiology (2009) and a MSc in food science and engineering (2012) in her home country, France. During her MSc, she spent a year at the University College of Cork in Ireland (ERASMUS European exchange). She led a research project in a food biotechnology laboratory at Purdue University in the USA and was an intern for the charity Action Against Hunger in Paris, France, and for the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition in Geneva, Switzerland.
